Nimble Storage hybrid array improves law firm’s VDI performance

When normal spinning hoop arrays came adult brief on opening for a virtual
desktop infrastructure,
Minneapolis-based law organisation Lindquist Vennum switched to a hybrid
array from Nimble Storage Inc.

The Nimble
Storage
hybrid array’s solid-state drives
(SSDs) yield adequate opening for a company’s 350 determined practical desktops, as good as
other applications.

The hybrid storage array has achieved so good that, in further to a practical desktop
infrastructure (VDI), it handles roughly all of a law firm’s business-application servers and its
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone system, a firm’s systems operative Derek Schostag
said.

Schostag pronounced that a law organisation primarily deployed VDI regulating Windows 7 desktops on VMware
Inc.’s View 5.1 regulating one Dell Inc. EqualLogic
PS6500
array with 16 15,000-RPM Serial Attached SCSI, or SAS, drives.

Lindquist’s users typically run Microsoft Office applications, Web browsers, personal
applications, such as Pandora Radio, and lawsuit and e-discovery support applications, such as
AccessData Group LLC’s Summation. “We started out with one [array] and afterwards we satisfied it [didn't
have] adequate capacity-wise as good as performance-wise, so we bought another [EqualLogic] array
just to hoop that,” Schostag said.

But adding a second array didn’t solve a problem. So, Schostag looked for another solution.
He deliberate appropriation nonetheless another EqualLogic array since his group was gentle with the
system. He also looked during solutions from EMC Corp., though he pronounced that compulsory too many space and
complexity.

Schostag came opposite Nimble during his research. Nimble’s hybrid
storage
design and underline set intrigued him, though others in a law organisation had reservations
about traffic with a startup. He contacted Nimble-supplied references, and any one of them said
Nimble lived adult to a promises. “Which is kind of rare,” he said, “because any businessman fudges a
little bit.”

Lindquist bought a Nimble CS240 array with 16 terabytes (TB) of serviceable spinning-disk capacity
and 640 GB of SSDs. The organisation also uses iSCSI
over 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Cisco’s B-series blade servers, and dual Cisco Nexus 5010 switches in the
Thompson Reuters’ Eagan, Minn., information core where it houses a IT equipment.

Nimble’s
compression
supposing evident advantage when a law organisation commissioned it 6 months ago. “I took
all those [virtual] desktops, 11.4 TB value of practical desktops, and changed them all in one week
over to a Nimble [array],” Schostag said. “It went from 11.4 TB to 4.4 TB. So, somewhere we
reclaimed 6 TB. Plus, we went from dual arrays and 32 disks down to one Nimble array.”

Schostag pronounced he infrequently would get end-user calls about nonresponsive desktops when he used
the EqualLogic arrays, though he has gifted no opening issues with Nimble. “We would have to
do a antivirus updates during night,” he said. “We had to sustenance desktops during off-hours. If we
wanted to build a new [virtual machine] or counterpart a VM, we had to do it after-hours since it would
just kill a array. Now we do it in a center of a day. Nobody even notices.”

Schostag partially attributes his high-performance statistics to a Nimble array’s cache-hit
rate, that he pronounced is regulating around 75%. “So, it’s removing a infancy of a information from
cache, a SSDs, instead of going to a [spinning] disks,” he said.

Schostag pronounced Nimble’s application allows him to use usually about 35% of a ability he would
need though a data
reduction
. That authorised him to pierce many of Lindquist’s servers onto a Nimble array. He is
also formulation to enhance a storage ability accessible to any desktop from a 16 GB extent to 40
GB.

Lindquist still has a dual EqualLogic arrays, though Schostag skeleton to use them for applications
that don’t need high performance, such as archiving.
